안개는 장르와 동서고금을 막론하고 수많은 작가들에게 영감을 준 새벽의 정령이다. 아트퍼니처 작
가로 활동 중인 손상우도 마음에 스며든 안개 속에서 영감이 피어났다고 한다. 작업에 한계를 느끼
고 있을 때 떠난 일본 여행에서 우연히 만난 아침 안개 자욱한 정원, 그 고요하고 환상적인 장면은 답
답함을 걷어주었고, ‘Kiri-Tray Table’은 안개처럼 은은한 빛을 머금은 자태를 드러냈다. 안개를 표
현하기 위해 찢은 한지를 틀에 배치하고 에폭시 수지를 주입하는 방식으로 제작하고, 형태는 소반
을 현대적으로 재해석해 한국 전통 이미지를 미니멀하게 완성했다. 일본에서 진행된 ‘마루누마 예
술의 숲’ 레지던스 프로그램에 참가한 3개월 동안 만들어진 까닭에 일본어로 안개를 뜻하는 ‘Kiri’라
는 이름을 붙였지만, 손상우 작가는 한국 전통의 정체성이 자연스럽게 드러나면서 해외에서도 받아
들여질 수 있는 작업을 위해 고심한다. 목공을 전공하고도 나무에만 매달리지 않고 새롭고 현대적
인 소재를 시도하는 데 주저하지 않는다. 겹겹이 쌓여갈 그의 시행착오들이 소반 시리즈 ‘Kiri-Tray
Table’ 이후 작업을 고대하고 기대하게 하는 흐뭇한 이유다.

The fog is the spirit of dawn that has inspired countless artists of different genres worldwide.
Artist Sang Woo Son, who is an artist at Art Furniture, was also inspired by the fog that
touched his heart. He traveled to Japan when he was struggling, and he happened to visit a
garden engulfed in fog early in the morning. The calm and fantastic scene took away the fuzzi-
ness in his mind and it became an inspiration for ‘Kiri-Tray Table’ with the subtle radiance of
Kiri-Tray Table / 손상우 the fog. He mounted torn pieces of Hanji, traditional Korean paper on a frame and injected
한지, 레진 / 2018 epoxy resin to express the fog, and the shape has modernly reinterpreted Soban to represent a
traditional Korean image in a minimalistic approach. It was named ‘Kiri’, which means fog in
Japanese, as it was created during the three months that he was participating in the ‘Marunuma
Forest of Art’ Residence Program in Japan. However, Son is dedicated to expressing the tra-
ditional identity of Korea in a way that is naturally appealing to anyone abroad. Although he
majored in Carpentry, he is not one to shy from trying out new, modern materials other than
wood for his works. The layers of trials and errors that he experienced will be included in his
future creations after ‘Kiri-Tray Table’ of the Soban Series.
