우리는 매일 이불을 덮는다. 하루의 고단함을 토닥토닥 위로하고 더러는 허물을 덮어주며, 대개는
행복한 꿈을 꾸게 한다. 인생에서 절반의 시간 동안 우리는 그 성스럽고 아름다운 일을 한다. 이슬
기 작가가 2014년부터 선보이는 <이불 프로젝트 U>도 지극히 개인적이고 친밀한 사물인 이불이
건네는 조언과 소통을 담았다. 내용은 익숙한 한국 속담에서 따오고 위트 넘치는 기하학 문양과 오
방색으로 간결하게 표현했다. 속담을 작가의 아이디어로 그려 장인들에게 전달하면 통영 누비장
인이 한 줄 한 줄 반듯하게 바느질해 이불을 꾸민다. 색색의 진주 명주 조각들에 누벼진 바느질 방
향이 달라 이 조각들을 잇는 까다로운 작업은 통영 누비장 조성연 선생의 손을 거쳐 비로소 완성된
다. 이불의 짜임에 녹아든 속담의 무늬는 주술의 언어를 닮았고, 정성스런 누빔은 간절한 염원처
럼 이어진다. 이 꿈꾸는 이불을 덮고 자는 이의 꿈은 얼마나 찬란하고 유쾌할까?

We tuck in a blanket to go to sleep every night. The blanket pats and comforts you after a
long, hard day, covers your flaws, and invites you to a happy dream. It performs such a holy and
beautiful job for almost half of your lifetime. Artist Seul Gi Lee’s <Blanket Project U> in 2014
conveys the advice and messages from this extremely personal and intimate object. The mes-
sages are composed of popular old sayings in Korea, while the designs are fun simply expressed
U : 싹이 노랗다 / 이슬기 / 통영 누비 장인 협업 with geometric patterns and the five traditional colors of Korea. The sayings are portrayed in
진주 명주 / 195×155×1cm / 2018 drawings, and the pieces are delivered to Tongyeong’s quilting masters who sew them together

into a blanket. This meticulous piece of quilting is completed by Tongyeong’s Quilting Master
Sung Youn Cho, as the direction of quilts over the colorful pearly silk pieces is different. The
patterns of sayings on the blankets resemble magical spells, and the delicate sewing symbolizes
devoted wishes. How splendid and exciting would the dreams be for those who sleep under
these blankets?
