발그레한 뺨에 깃든 건강한 아름다움

Healthy Beauty as Reflected on Flushed Cheeks

은은하게 볼을 물들여 고귀한 신분을 상징하고 기품 넘치는 단장을 했던 옛 여인들의 색조화장,
그 속에 담긴 고운 지혜를 들여다본다.

예로부터 우리 민족은 청결하고 아름다운 몸가짐을 중시했다. 흰색을 숭상해 희고 윤택한 피부를
만들고자 애썼고, 삼국시대부터는 색조화장에 대한 기록이 남아 있을 정도로 미의식이 깊었다. 고
구려 고분벽화에는 신분에 관계없이 연지를 찍은 여인들의 모습이 그려져 있고 신라인들은 연지를
만들어 볼과 입술을 치장했다. 백제는 일본에 화장품 제조 기술과 화장술을 전했다는 기록이 일본
의 옛 문헌 <삼재도회三才圖會>에 남아 있다.
색조화장의 첫 번째 단계에는 백토, 진주 가루, 쌀가루, 분꽃씨 가루 등의 ‘분 粉’을 발라 피부를 환
하게 정돈했다. 눈썹은 ‘미묵眉墨’이라는 것으로 그렸는데 숯 그을음을 기름에 혼합해 만들었다. 눈
썹을 그리고 나면 연지로 뺨을 발그레하게 표현했다. <본초강목本草綱目>에 따르면 연지는 ‘연나
라에서 건너온 화장품’이라는 의미에서 ‘연지燕脂’로 표기했으며 뺨에 연지를 바르는 의미에 대해
서는 여러 가지 학설이 있다. 14~15세 소녀의 뺨이 절로 홍조를 띠는 것처럼 젊음을 나타내기 위한
것이라는 설, 결혼하는 신부의 연지곤지 또한 붉은 연지를 동그란 모양의 곤지로 찍어 처녀성과 젊

Since the olden times, Koreans appreciated the neatness and beauty of appearance. They wor-
shipped the color white, so they longed to make their skin white and refined. They were also
aesthetically aware as there were records of color makeup existing during The Age of the Three
Kingdoms of Korea. The tomb murals of Goguryeo portray women with blushers on their
cheeks regardless of social status, and the people of Silla produced their own color pigments for
their cheeks and lips. An old text from Japan, titled <Samjaedohoe>, states that Baekje transmit-
ted cosmetic production technology and skills to Japan.
The first step in color makeup was brightening the skin tone with powder that was made with
white clay, pearl powder, rice flour, or Mirabilis jalapa seed powder. The eyebrows were shaped

Yeonji was written as ‘燕脂,’ meaning ‘cosmetics from the Yan Dynasty.’ There are different
stories about the meaning of Yeonji on the cheeks. Some say that it is to express youth as a 14-
